The Story
Makato is Stepantsminda's quieter restaurant — more local, less visited by the adventure tourism crowd, with a kitchen that makes a small menu of Georgian dishes with the kind of care that comes from cooking for regulars rather than for first-timers.
The chakapuli is exceptional when in season. The pkhali — herb-and-walnut vegetable balls — are better than most versions in Tbilisi.
Signature Dishes

Chakapuli (seasonal)
Spring lamb with tarragon and green plums — the Easter dish of Georgia, available in April and May. Don't miss it.

Pkhali
Walnut-and-herb vegetable balls — spinach, beet, or bean. The Georgian vegetarian at its best.

Khachapuri Acharuli
The boat-shaped bread filled with cheese, butter, and egg from Adjara. Order one between two.
The Feeling
Feels like
A family kitchen that happens to serve other people — warm, slow, unpretentious.
Best time
Evening — the mountain air is cool, the food is warm
Perfect for
The CinCin Notes
Makato is the restaurant for your second evening in Kazbegi — after you've done Samani, when you want something quieter and more local. Order the chakapuli in spring. Ask what they made today.
