Bordeaux
Wine country along the Garonne and Dordogne.
The Bordelais is wine country, and that shapes everything: the colour of the houses (limestone, honey-yellow), the shape of the land (rows to the horizon) and the rhythm of the year (harvest in September, silence in winter).
East of Bordeaux, where the Gironde gives way to the Lot-et-Garonne, it gets more rural than the grand châteaux suggest. Small estates, bastide towns from the 13th century, markets where you talk to the winemaker about his wine rather than to his distributor. The Dordogne isn't far, and with it the landscape the French mean when they say "campagne".
Bordeaux itself has turned, in twenty years, from a grey port into one of France's most beautiful cities. A day is enough; the country behind it needs more.
The Bordelais is France with a wine cellar.
We don't recommend the Bordelais for château tours but for a house you stay in. Manoir Laurette is such a house: a 19th-century manor, five rooms full of found objects, a natural-wine cellar and a hot tub in the garden. In 2026 the house is available only as a whole — for a group of friends that's the best news of the year. Come for the harvest in September or in May when the vines bud. In August France is on holiday and so is the Bordelais.
