Vigilius Mountain Resort
Architectural nature retreat, radically reduced, deliberately remote
A hotel you have to consciously earn. No road, no quick check-in — instead a cable car that slowly rises through the forest. Once at the top, something shifts: the sounds disappear, the view opens, and the vigilius sits quietly on the slope — as if it had always been there.

“Accessible only by cable car — the car-free plateau at 1,500m is the most radical form of slow travel.”
Our take
Why we love it
Accessible only by cable car — the journey is already part of the experience
Architecture by Matteo Thun: horizontal along the slope, glass facing the valley, silence facing the mountain
Car-free, silent, without distraction — genuine slowness, not a marketing promise
Untreated larch wood, soft light, long sightlines — reduction as a philosophy
Silence at 1,500m in the morning — Merano, palm trees and city life in the afternoon
Dining
Food & Drink
The kitchen follows the same logic as the hotel: clear, regional, without overstatement. Focus on South Tyrolean products, seasonal menus, modern interpretation of traditional cuisine. Not classical fine dining — rather precise, calm, reduced. Breakfast is central: regional products, fresh ingredients, no overwhelming buffet.
Spa & Sport
Wellness & Activities
The spa follows the exact same logic as the hotel. Indoor pool with valley views, outdoor pool, saunas with forest views, rest areas with minimal design. No artificial staging — nature remains the main attraction.
Your time here
What your days could look like
Morning: breakfast with regional products, light falls softly through the large glass fronts. Late morning: walking through the forests directly from the hotel, no transfer, no crowds. Midday: return, spa, outdoor pool overlooking the Etsch Valley. Afternoon: cable car down to Lana, walk to Merano. Evening: return uphill — the silence receives you again.
Location
The Area
Lana, South Tyrol, Italy
The vigilius sits on the Vigiljoch, a car-free plateau above Lana at around 1,500 metres. No roads, no traffic, no through-route — only forest, trails and alpine meadows. Down in the valley: Merano with its Mediterranean climate, palm trees, promenades, thermal baths and a mix of Alps and south you rarely find elsewhere. Summer: hiking directly from the hotel, mountain biking, trips to Merano. Winter: snowshoeing, quiet winter landscapes.
People
The Hosts
Family-run and consistently built around one idea: tourism doesn't have to be loud. The owners pursue an approach that is often claimed but rarely delivered — genuine slowness. Local materials, energy-efficient construction, conscious reduction of resources. Sustainability here is not an add-on but a foundation.
