Overview

What makes Merano special

  • Southern Europe's most celebrated spa destination — Terme Merano at its heart
  • Mild microclimate — palms and magnolias grow alongside Alpine peaks
  • The Tappeiner promenade — a historic tree-lined walk above the town
  • Belle époque architecture and elegant café culture
  • Gateway to the Vinschgau valley and some of South Tyrol's finest wines
  • Merano Apple Show — one of the most beautiful food festivals in Italy

The Story

Merano became a spa town in the 19th century when Empress Elisabeth of Austria — Sisi — came to take the cure. The infrastructure that followed has never really left: thermal baths, promenades, gardens, grand hotels, cafés with cake trolleys and newspapers on wooden holders.

What's remarkable is that it still works. The town has a pace that feels genuinely unhurried — not in the way of a place that has nothing to do, but in the way of a place that has decided there's no rush to do it. The promenade along the Passer river is lined with magnolias and rose gardens. The spa is genuinely among the best in Europe.

The food is the quiet revelation. Merano sits at the intersection of Austrian and Italian culinary traditions — Speck from the Vinschgau, wine from the hillside vineyards, Knödel that somehow taste better here than anywhere else. And the coffee is Italian, which means it's very good.

This is a town for people who have already been everywhere and want to slow down.

Meran — Story

Don't Miss

Terme Merano

The thermal spa complex at the centre of the town — indoor and outdoor pools, medical treatments, saunas, panoramic views of the mountains. One of the finest spas in the Alps.

Tappeiner Promenade

A 4 km walk above the town through Mediterranean gardens — palm trees, olive groves, and views over the rooftops to the Dolomites.

Schloss Trauttmansdorff

The castle where Sisi came to recover — now a museum dedicated to her, surrounded by 12 hectares of extraordinary tiered gardens.

The River Passirio

The river that runs through the old town, flanked by two promenades — summer and winter routes, lined with roses and wisteria.

Things To Do

  • Thermal bathing at Terme Merano

Indoor and outdoor pools at different temperatures, with views of the mountains. Go in the morning before it fills up.

  • Walking the Tappeiner Promenade

4 km of easy walking through Mediterranean gardens above the town. Best in the morning — light through the palms, town quiet below.

  • E-bike rides into the Vinschgau

The Val Venosta cycle path is one of Europe's finest — almost entirely downhill from the pass into the valley, through ancient orchards.

The CinCin Notes

Merano is the kind of place that takes a little explaining — it doesn't look like anywhere else in Italy, doesn't feel like anywhere in Austria, and doesn't quite fit the usual Alpine template either.

What it is, is one of Europe's finest slow-travel destinations. The thermal baths are genuinely exceptional. The pace is deliberate. The combination of Belle époque architecture, mountain backdrop, and Italian food culture is unlike anything we've found elsewhere.

Pfoesl sits above the town — slightly removed, with views that reward arriving at the right time of day. We recommend it specifically for people who want a base that feels genuinely away while still being close to one of the best towns in the Alps.

Come for three or four nights minimum. Stay longer if the weather holds.
