Arthotel Blaue Gans
A house that has taken in guests since 1350 — Salzburg's oldest inn, in the middle of the Getreidegasse, a stone's throw from Mozart's birthplace and directly opposite the Festival Hall. Andreas Gfrerer has turned the centuries-old walls into an arthotel: more than 120 works of art, 34 rooms each a one-of-a-kind, a restaurant with a vaulted hall, a brasserie and a wine archive in the rock cellar. Not a museum, but a lived-in place where history, design and contemporary art stand side by side as a matter of course.

Our take
Why we love it
Salzburg's oldest guesthouse — since 1350 — and not for a second museum-like. History that is lived in.
More than 120 works of art make this an arthotel: here, art is an attitude, not decoration.
The location is unbeatable — the Getreidegasse, opposite the Festival Hall, beside Mozart's birthplace.
A restaurant with three worlds: vaulted hall, brasserie and a wine archive in a 14th-century rock cellar.
34 rooms, each one-of-a-kind: plenty of design, light on knick-knacks, historic walls as the stage.
Food & Drink

Salzburg's oldest guesthouse as an arthotel — over 120 works of art within 660-year-old walls.
Restaurant & Vaulted Hall
Chef Max Sampl and his team cook along the old Salzburg–Venice trade route: Alpine ingredients combined with flavours from the south, refined with house-made or carefully chosen products. In the colder months the historic vaulted hall, with its barrel ceiling, is the warmest seat in the house.
Brasserie & Campari Bar
The modern brasserie brings metropolitan lightness into the old house — casual, lively, made for a glass and good conversation. The Campari bar nods to the centuries-old trade routes between Salzburg and Venice; in summer, the terrace right in front of the Festival Hall draws in a Mediterranean mood.
Wine Archive in the Rock Cellar
The rustic 14th-century cellar, cut straight into the Mönchsberg rock, holds a wine archive of around 1,500 bottles. A retreat for intimate gatherings, tastings and long evenings away from the bustle of the old town.

The City's Oldest Guesthouse
Goosebumps since 1350
Guests have been taken in here since 1350 — which makes the Blaue Gans the oldest guesthouse in Salzburg. It stands in the middle of the Getreidegasse, the old town's most famous lane with its wrought-iron guild signs, just a few steps from Mozart's birthplace and directly opposite the Festival Hall.
Owner Andreas Gfrerer has carefully revived the centuries-old walls: old structures, natural stone floors and vaults were left visible and married with clear, contemporary design. The result is not a nostalgic hotel but a lived-in, vibrant place within the UNESCO World Heritage old town of Salzburg.

Art Throughout the House
More than 120 works
More than 120 works of art make the Blaue Gans what its name promises: an arthotel. They do not merely hang on the walls but shape the corridors, the rooms and the restaurant — from interventions by contemporary artists to the design of the spaces themselves, turning the whole house into a habitable work of art.
Those who wish can follow the "Walk of Modern Art" through the house and the quarter. Here art is not an add-on but the attitude from which everything else grows — hospitality as an encounter with inspiring people and their work.

34 One-of-a-Kind Rooms
Plenty of design, light on knick-knacks
Thirty-four rooms and suites, from spacious to compact — and no two are alike. Historic architecture, craftsmanship and natural materials shape each space; artworks and design classics meet old walls, wooden floors and the light of the old town.
The principle is clear: plenty of design, light on knick-knacks. From the compact room to the suite and the City Flat, there is a fit for every personal circumstance — all just steps from Salzburg's great stages, museums and squares.

A Kitchen Between Salzburg and Venice
Alpine meets the south
In the house restaurant, Max Sampl and his team cook along the historic Salzburg–Venice trade route: Alpine ingredients combined with flavours from the south, refined with house-made or carefully chosen products. Honest, precise, seasonal.
Three very different settings for three very different moods: the historic vaulted hall for intimate evenings, the lively brasserie with its Campari bar for company, and the wine archive in the 14th-century rock cellar with around 1,500 bottles. In summer, the terrace opens directly in front of the Festival Hall.

People
The Hosts
Andreas Gfrerer runs the Blaue Gans as a personal project — and sees it less as a hotel than as a "large treasure trove in which I preserve encounters with inspiring people". From this attitude grew the arthotel: the idea of the old guesthouse as a gathering place for the community, carried forward with contemporary art, clear design and a kitchen that takes its place seriously. The house is run by a team that, as hotel manager Cornelia puts it, "opens doors to concert halls, restaurants and the most beautiful places in the city for our guests".

Salzburg
Getreidegasse 41–43, 5020 Salzburg, Austria
The Blaue Gans sits in the heart of Salzburg's old town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site — on the Getreidegasse, opposite the Festival Hall and Herbert-von-Karajan-Platz, a few steps from Mozart's birthplace. Everything is on foot: the funicular up to Hohensalzburg Fortress, the Mönchsberg with its galleries, the Salzach river and the old-town lanes. In summer the Festival shapes the city, in Advent the Christmas markets. Salzburg Airport is around 20 minutes away, the main station ten; the lakes of the Salzkammergut and the Alps begin at the city's edge.
