Maryhill Estate
Maryhill Estate is a daydream played out in reality. On a hill above the Öresund, surrounded by golden rapeseed fields, sits a country estate of two houses: the large, vibrant Sugar Club and the small, historic Hill House. The mood is classic, elegant and touched with timeless glamour — floral pastel patterns run as a motif through the whole house, champagne glasses clink, but with a wink. Condé Nast Traveller calls it “Gatsby goes to the countryside.”

Our take
Why we love it
Two houses in one: the vibrant Sugar Club and the historic Hill House — two moods, one estate, with no need to choose.
A pool club with three year-round heated pools, 126 sun loungers and fireplaces under a glass roof — summer that never quite ends.
Gastronomy at the heart: Mediterranean sharing at the Sugar Club, 1920s glamour at Hill House, seafood at the harbour — led by a Chef of the Year.
A real story with style: built by a sugar baron in 1918, named after a declaration of love — today “Gatsby goes to the countryside” (Condé Nast) and on Travel+Leisure's 2025 It List.
A seaside setting barely an hour from Copenhagen and just 30 minutes from Malmö — close, and yet far from everything.
Food & Drink

Two houses, two culinary journeys: Mediterranean feasting and sharing at the Sugar Club, 1920s French-American glamour at Hill House.
Sugar Club — Restaurant
The Sugar Club restaurant is a generous Mediterranean table: authentic flavours from Greece and Italy, colourful plates to share, charismatic service. Eating here is the way it's done in the south — loud, sociable, easygoing in the best sense. Led by a kitchen team around CEO and master chef Robert “Bobbo” Nilsson (Chef of the Year 1998).
Hill House — Restaurant & Bar
In the historic Hill House the joyful spirit of the 1920s comes alive: French-American classics that spark conversation, drinks that speak for themselves, and an “always olive-forward dry martini” by the pool. Dance, elegance and nostalgic glamour, with views over the pool and the sea.
Ålabodarna's Harbor Restaurant
Right by the sea, at a quaint little harbour, “Ålabodarnashamn Krog” serves classic seafood dishes — Skåne at its most maritime, with the Öresund just outside the door.
Seven Bars & the Pool Club
By day the estate belongs to the bars and the Pool Club: aperitivo between the three pools, shaken martinis, “daydrinking & daydreaming” across 126 sun loungers. Seven bars in all are spread across the two houses.

Two Houses, One Estate
Sugar Club & Hill House
Maryhill is not a single hotel but a resort of two houses, only a few steps apart. The larger, vibrant part is the Sugar Club: 147 rooms, a generous pool club, a restaurant, bars and several event spaces — a classic resort with a bright, sunlit mood.
The smaller, older Hill House — the former castle — carries the biggest piece of history. Sixteen rooms, classic gastronomy and 1920s glamour, looking out over the pool and the Öresund. Two atmospheres, one estate — you don't choose between them, you wander through both.

The Pool Club
Three pools, heated year-round
The heart of the Sugar Club is the Pool Club: three pools heated year-round beneath a glass roof, plus 126 sun loungers, canopied lounge beds and open fireplaces. You wander between the pools, between daydream and reality — and at the end of the day, you fall asleep effortlessly.
For those who prefer the open air: in front of Hill House waits another pool, surrounded by floral parasols and greenery. Four pools in all, a spa, and the feeling that summer here never quite ends.

An Icon Since 1918
From Örenäs Slott to Maryhill
The castle was built between 1914 and 1918 by sugar-beet pioneer Carl Tranchell — hence the name “Sugar Club.” The estate later passed to district governor August Anderberg, who renamed it “Mariehild” in honour of his wife. Mariehild became Maryhill.
Over the decades the house saw royal visits and, during the Second World War, served as a refuge. For years it was known as “Örenäs Slott”; when it reopened as a resort on 18 November 2024, ESS Group gave the estate its historic name back. Not renovated but, as the house puts it, “kindly restored.”

Gatsby Goes to the Countryside
Floral pastels, copper fireplaces, not a hint of stuffiness
The interiors are femininely stylish, with floral pastel patterns as a recurring motif — a deliberate blend of modern luxury and historic simplicity. Condé Nast Traveller saw “more than a hint of Soho Farmhouse” and “the design and finesse of a members' club without any of the stuffiness.”
Curved sofas around central copper fireplaces, glass roofs full of plants, a bar with a painted ceiling: Maryhill takes itself just seriously enough to make things beautiful — and not so seriously that it becomes hard work. In 2025, Travel+Leisure named the house to its It List of the 100 best new hotels in the world.

Days at the Estate
Tennis, croquet, celebrations
Between daydreams and shaken martinis, Maryhill offers more than a weekend can hold: tennis and padel courts, petanque, archery, croquet, garden badminton, a gym — and golf just a stone's throw away.
On a hill amid the greenery, with an astonishing view of the sea, Maryhill has always been a place for big moments. With its rich history, the estate has hosted weddings and celebrations that went down in memory — and sixteen event spaces stand ready for parties and conferences alike.

Sugar Club — Rooms
The 147 rooms in the Sugar Club carry the signature of the whole house: floral pastel patterns, warm colours, playful details and a considered blend of modern luxury and nostalgic charm. Bright, vibrant spaces in the spirit of a classic resort — “French Riviera Tan,” as the house puts it.

The Hosts
Maryhill is ESS Group's 13th destination. Since opening Ystad Saltsjöbad in 2007, the group has built everything around the guest — personal places, considered food concepts, and stays that turn into moments of happiness. The family includes houses such as Hotel Pigalle, Ellery Beach House, Steam Hotel and Marienlyst. For a resort where gastronomy is the heart, it is fitting that master chef Robert “Bobbo” Nilsson — Chef of the Year 1998, Scandinavian Chef of the Year 2000 — leads Maryhill as CEO, alongside F&B manager Martin Hansen and his 30 years in Nordic fine dining.

Glumslöv, Skåne
Ålabodsvägen 193, 261 63 Glumslöv, Sweden
Maryhill sits in Glumslöv, between Landskrona and Helsingborg on the west coast of Skåne — on a hill above the Öresund, surrounded by the golden rapeseed fields that Condé Nast Traveller singled out for praise. The view reaches across the strait to Denmark. Copenhagen and Kastrup airport are around 60 minutes away, Malmö just 30, Gothenburg a little over two hours. A short train ride from Copenhagen is all it takes — and yet it feels far from everything.
